There are some obvious similarities like Nationalism, putting the country first, not being bogged down by opposition agendas, couldnt care less of what people think about them, not in it for the popularity ratings, tough negotiators, and a reputation to get the job done!
The more important similarity is less obvious - the extreme emotions that they evoke in people. The emotions are either of extreme admiration or of extreme dislike. Either they absolutely and fundamentally connect with somebody, or really get under their skin.
I happen to be in the group that admires both Modi and Trump.
The comparisons I could see which people could perceive as similarities
- Both were nominated from the Right wing in their respective countries.
- Both had a plan and propaganda well before their rivals.
- Both had replaced the then existing (so called) liberal long run Governments.
- Most strikingly, they have overcome the analysis and predictions of the conventional media and made them look fools.
I believe these comparisons are purely situational but not with respect to their character or actions or behavior or agenda. Its their actions (quite opposite in nature) which made them leaders.
Credentials for Nomination:
Modi successfully projected his self made transformation from tea seller to 3 time chief minister, a very good track record of attracting business and corporate, and maintain good relationships with all kinds of business small or large. Though he had dark past and allegations he had come clean in the eyes of law and maintained clean record in governance as a Chief Minister. He competed with seniors within the party to be nominated as Prime Minister candidate unanimously. Literally he earned his nomination.
On the other hand Trump’s nomination was rather forced. Though he was famous as a businessman there is nothing to show his track record as an elected representative or a public servant. His party had neither clue or confidence if his nomination was optimal. He just fought it till the end with his publicity(which worked) till no choice was left for his party.
Planing and Propaganda:
Though targeted for his infamous past by the media(even after supreme court clearing his name) , Modi successfully deviated the attention from the negative to positive by showcasing his development model and agenda. He never went into the trap set by media but dictated the agenda for next big story for the media and most importantly had never made any controversial remarks under pressure. This positive approach helped him to gain trust from all sectors.
Trump’s propaganda is simple. He always stuck to his key words (Muslims, immigrants, wall, ISIS) adding superlative adjectives for himself and mocking comments on the opponents(anyone showing a finger at him). He weighed on the negative publicity to reach out to the voter. (and it worked!!!).
Opponents:
Modi’s opponents knew that they had no chance of winning the election. They only hoped. They never had opportunity or new agenda to counter him. But what none could anticipate is the margin of victory.
Trump won because his opponents were overconfident. They never saw a chance of such controversial and unpopular (as projected) could be a threat to their liberal and open mindset. Instead of projecting themselves they turned to Trump bashing (knowingly or unknowingly) and fell into his trap.
Media:
Modi had seen the potential of the growing social media trend in young India and was able to capture much of its share much before its opponents.
Trump however had disadvantage as most of USA is already hooked to Internet and the share is already occupied equally.
After Assuming Power:
Modi did the unthinkable. He invited SAARC leaders including Pakistan for the swearing in ceremony. Nobody saw this coming because of the harsh words he had used against Pakistan during the election. This had been lauded for the progressive and positive thinking. This showed that he would not be isolating India and grow together as group.
Trump did what he had promised, he put a temporary ban on 7 countries, resulting in chaos at airports. Had irked Mexican leaders regarding his comments on the Wall. We need to see the result of these actions in the long term.
They are both different leaders with different backgrounds. Apples and Oranges.
My favorite quote (which is mine, btw):
If you call an apple an orange, you’re not a liberal/progressive, revolutionary or an activist. You’re either ignorant or a dishonest liar.
When people who pout comparisons like this online take a week off, relax, calm down and question their deeply held beliefs/biases sincerely, they’d probably do themselves a favor. They should ask themselves sincerely if they’re acting on he said/she said or if actual facts support their notions. Because to the rational crowd, these people come off as either funny or lacking in things. To the crowd that comes up with these comparisons, the rest of the people come off as privileged because we can’t see the things that they see.
Mr. Modi has been investigated by the highest court of the land, put on a trial by media (more like a witchhunt) and trials of every sort during a hostile Congress regime for ten long years and not a shred of evidence, besides the made up crap, came up? This is like claiming that moon landings were fake. Or the entire scientific community is falsifying data to prove climate change is real. When you make such tall claims that the whole system around you is lying, you have an equally incredible responsibility towards the burden the proof.
Prime Minister Modi was a three-time chief minister of a state that by any measure of governance stands out and within the top five states of the country. He didn’t come to power on the grounds of a divisive campaign.
Here’s something you don’t hear often. Under Prime Minister Modi, India has opened its borders to people of all faiths who are persecuted in the neighboring countries.
When absolutely nothing in Mr. Modi’s words or actions remotely come close to being divisive, people catch on to the things he should have done in their opinion which he didn’t do, and label him a divisive figure.
People catch on to incidents of violence that have happened regularly with or without Modi, in states not ruled by his party, and attribute it to him, bypassing the state governments that are responsible for law and order.
Protesters in Tamil Nadu claimed Modi is not acting on their demands. Do you really want a PM capable of reaching into the highest court of the land and be able to dictate to them?
In India, there are some extremist progressives who cannot be satisfied by anything the BJP does, some just brainwashed by their experience, some just very biased. They live in their echo chambers, not wanting to listen to a second opinion and labeling the rest of the people.
Overall, you have to be incredibly indifferent to facts to compare Modi and Trump. Both have almost nothing in common, except in colorful imagination.
Wrong Comparison!
Seriously, this is a wrong comparison. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is actively involved in serving the society and serving the people from his early age. He started his political journey with RSS. He has started from a humble beginning and reached greater heights. It has been said that, he was working in a coffee shop during the earlier days. Basically, he is from a normal middle class Indian family.
He served as the Chief Minister of an Indian State Gujarat for 12 years and showed significant results. He has attracted people with his development and policies. People considered him as the savior during 2014. Understanding the people’s mood and expectation, BJP made Narendra Modi has Prime Minister Candidate and won the election with absolute majority. It was a clean win for Prime Minister Modi.
But on other hand, President Donald Trump’s journey was quite different. He was business tycoon in the United states with nil political experience. He had not served people or he had not held any positions in the past. He became the President candidate with his business influence. President Trump is a newbie to the American Politics and International Politics. He has neither shown any result or shown any impressive economical ideas for the Nation.
It is seriously ridiculous to compare President Donald Trump with Prime Minister Modi. How can we compare,
14 years Political journey Vs 1+ years of Political journey?
Narendra Modi truly loves India and people of India. Trump has expressed his love for the nation and we have yet to see his love for the country.
Let’s see, how it goes!
Cheers!
On the surface, Modi and Trump might seem alike. This is mostly because they’re both considered conservative and right. Both tend to adopt nationalist and protectionist attitude when it comes to politics and generate polarizing sentiments in people of their respective countries.
Beyond that, Modi and Trump couldn’t be farther apart if they tried. Trump is more focused on reinforcing the old status quo and bringing back conservative ideas that don’t fit the modern society. This includes the opposition to pro-choice, measures against environment, bans against a particular community, etc. He does this to appease the red-belt and conservative section of the society and doesn’t seem too concerned about the impact on others.
Modi, on the other hand, has a progressive attitude and conservatism isn’t on his agenda. Yes, he’s a strict Hindu but you won’t see him disrespecting or dismissing the rights of other communities. He’s also a strong supporter of women’s rights with the beti-bachao campaign, etc. He doesn’t dismiss climate change or the science community.
I’m not saying that Modi is perfect, but there’s no way Trump and Modi can be compared. They’re only similar to each other on surface ideals. I hate to say this because this is the same rhetoric that’s cited by supporters of Trump in the US, but Indian media is very biased in their reporting. They have always been. There are instances they have highlighted news about cruelties against the minority communities in India but have not reported on cruelties against majority Hindu community.
I would like Modi to work more on the environment, equality, progress of the nation, etc. I would also like him to have laws to protect children in place, and standardize marriage laws for all communities, etc. I would also like the government to look into the interest of LGBTQ community in India. There are many things Modi still has to do but there’s no way Trump and Modi should be placed in the same category.
It’s also very difficult to compare the two because US and India are two vastly different countries and cultures.
Now First of all Let me present to you two facts
1.Trump is from a Well to do Family
2.NaMo comes from a poor family background
A.Now Modi faces equal criticism from the Opposition in India though never disrespected by the masses. Trump on the other hand faces criticism for his policies from the Opposition and has reportedly been disrespected by the people of the US.
B.NaMo tries to arise a sense of Unity among the Indians whereas Trump tends to challenge the unity of America as a whole
C.Trump is known to be much of an opportunist whereas NaMo has been a member of the same party throughout his political career
Well they both are similar in a few aspects too..
A.Both are known to be intensely patriotic
B.Both have been focusing a lot on the modification of the Foreign policies of their respective nations
